Progress Update on The Journey Down Chapter 2

If you're like me, you might be wondering how chapter 2 of The Journey Down is coming along. Luckily, the Chapter 2 Work in Progress thread at Desura has just been updated with news and new screenshots.

They've got an internal preliminary playable-to-the-end build of the game up and running, but there's a lot of things missing yet and most of the movies are still animated storyboards. There are still some puzzles that need inside knowledge to solve, but they hope to have an internal beta version of the game ready by February that will allow the game to be completed by people who don't know the solutions to all the puzzles.

It's good to know that chapter two is coming along nicely, as The Journey Down Chapter One was one of my favorite adventure games of last year.

The Walking Dead: Season Two Release Dates

Telltale just made a post on Twitter announcing the release dates for The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode 1: All That Remains.

It will release later today for PC and Mac (through the Telltale Store and Steam) and for PlayStation 3 in North America. It will then release tomorrow worldwide for Xbox 360. The iOS version will be coming later this week. The European PlayStation 3 release date, as well as the release dates for the Vita and Ouya versions have not yet been set.

Interview With Gene Mocsy About 1954: Alcatraz

While we're on the subject of Gene Mocsy, you might remember that he started a company called Irresponsible Games, whose first game will be a point-and-click adventure game called Alcatraz: 1954, which, unsurprisingly is about escaping from Alcatraz prison in 1954. Gene originally designed the game himself using the Panda3D-based engine that MunkyFun designed for Autumn Moon's adventure games A Vampyre Story and Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island. However, the game soon was picked up by the German adventure developer Daedalic, and it was converted to their Unity-based engine.

GamingLives has an interview with Mr. Mocsy which details that event, and gives many more details about his company's first game. One of the most interesting details in the interview is about the wide choice the player has in solving the puzzles, and the consequences some of those choices might have:

"Multiple solutions are something I always want when I play games – that and an overhead map. I made sure those were in my game. It was a bit of a hassle, but I scripted the original game myself, so it was just a matter of my time. When Daedalic bought the game and re-ported it to their engine, they created an enormous flowchart of all the possibilities – that was when I realised the headache I’d caused everyone! It’s all for the player. I want you to keep moving ahead and not waste time guessing what the designer intended."

"Certain quest-lines get even more exciting and tension-filled [depending on your earlier actions], I’ll put it that way. Don’t worry about making wrong choices – you’re escaping from Alcatraz, there’s no time to second-guess yourself. Just go."

The game will be coming soon to PC. Daedalic had announced that it would be released this year, however, as no concrete release date has yet been set, it probably won't make that release window.

The Perils of Man Delayed To Early 2014

You may be wondering what is going on with the upcoming free iOS adventure game The Perils of Man, which is being developed by IF Games and designed by Bill Tiller and Gene Mocsy of Autumn Moon.

Its previous release date of October 2013 came and went, and the official Facebook page has been surprisingly quiet about the situation.

The game's FAQ has recently been updated, indicating that the game has been delayed to early 2014. However, there's no word on whether they still plan on releasing the game in two episodes as originally planned.

Al Lowe and Josh Mandel Quit Replay Games

Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe and co-writer Josh Mandel have left Replay Games due to the abusive and destructive behavior of Replay founder and CEO Paul Trowe.

As you know, last year he sabotaged fellow Kickstarter campaigns with false press releases and hurtful and deceitful comments (both under his own name and possibly under an assumed name).

Unfortunately, that behavior hasn't stopped, as he posted some hurtful words and unfounded claims at the SpaceVenture Kickstarter page in October. That behavior caused several Replay volunteers to criticize Paul's behavior publicly, leading Paul to fire them and ban them from the Replay forums. Worse, he insulted and publicly outed one volunteer as a transsexual woman (her name has been omitted from the twitter post to save her from any more emotional duress).

Additionally, Kotaku has posted an article that details Paul Trowe's arrest in October 2012 for showing a sex video to an underage teenage girl.

Al Lowe has stated that his leaving the company had to do with these and other reasons. Replay Games still owns the rights to make Leisure Suit Larry games for now, but if they do decide to make more, it will be without Al Lowe or Josh Mandel.

I would like to wish Al and Josh (as well as the Replay volunteers and employees who were affected by this) the best of luck in the future.

Jason The Greek on Kickstarter

Jason The Greek is a Kickstarter campaign for a 2D animated point-and-click adventure game inspired by Monkey Island, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Discworld and the Hector Badge of Carnage series, set in Ancient Greece. If the Kickstarter is successful, the tentative release date for the game is the summer of 2014 with a DRM-free release for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The campaign is seeking £10,000, and they are nearly there with only about £2,000 and 61 hours to go.  A DRM free version of the game, and a thank-you in the credits, is available for Windows, Mac, or Linux for only £5 for the next 80 pledgers (and £8 after that).  In addition, you can get an early alpha test version of the game at the £10 tier, an alpha and a beta test version at the £15 tier, a DVD copy of the game and poster at the £20 tier, an in-game statue bust of yourself at the £30 tier, and many more goodies at the higher tiers.  So, if you're interested in a classic style point-and-click adventure with an Ancient Greek twist, then choose a tier and support the Jason The Greek Kickstarter.

Game of Thrones and Borderlands Series By Telltale

At the Spike TV VGX awards, Telltale has announced two new episodic series.  The first is based on the HBO series (which itself is based on a series of novels) called Game of Thrones.  The teaser trailer can be viewed here.

The second series is based on Gearbox's Borderlands series, and is titled Tales From The Borderlands.  The teaser trailer for this one shows a bit more, including some new characters, and some dialog by Handsome Jack.

No release date for either title has been set yet, but IGN is reporting that both Game of Thrones and Tales From The Borderlands are set for release in 2014.

For those who don't know, this installment, which was funded by crowdfunding through Kickstarter, returns the series to it's roots, in that it is presented in a 2D style with hand drawn backgrounds (although the characters are animated in a 3D style).

GOG.com Insomnia Sale

GOG.com is having a very interesting sale. They have 101 games on sale for up to 80% off, but there are limited quantities available for each game, and when all the quantities available are sold, the next game is offered.

It's a very unusual sale, and quite clever, plus there have been a few adventure games available, so I thought I'd mention it here.  Right now, Jack Keane 2 is on sale for 60% off, but at the time of this writing there are only 24 left, so it'll go quick before the next deal is up.

Kickstarter for Obduction, from the creators of Myst

Another kickstarter from an adventure game veteran is ending soon. Obduction is an adventure game from Cyan, the creators of Myst and Riven. Like those games, Obduction is a first person adventure game that puts you in a new world with many areas to explore, and many puzzles to solve.

The kickstarter campaign is seeking 1.1 million dollars, however it is nearly there, with less than $200,000 to go, and only 5 days left. The tier to get a digital version of the game for Windows or Mac is $25, the $45 tier will get you a digital strategy guide, a digital copy of the soundtrack, and a digital artbook, and the $75 tier will get you a boxed special edition of the game plus your name as a "Box Backer" in the credits. As usual, there are many other tiers to choose from, so pick your tier, and support Cyan at the Obduction Kickstarter.

Kickstarter For The 7th Guest 3: The Collector

Yet another adventure game veteran has created a kickstarter campaign to seek crowd funding to a sequel to a classic franchise. The 7th Guest 3: The Collector is a campaign, by the original developer Trilobyte Games, for a third game in the full-motion video horror adventure series that previously brought us The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour.

The kickstarter campaign is seeking $435,000 US, and is currently an eighth of the way there with 27 days left to go.  Like its predecessors, The 7th Guest 3 will be presented in a full motion video format, and will once again feature the mysterious Stauf mansion which will be filled with diabolical toys, puzzles, and artifacts.

A digital version of the game for Windows, Mac, or Linux is available at the $20 tier, an additional download for iOS is available at the $25 tier, in-game credits are available at the $30 tier, a digital version of the soundtrack is available at the $40 tier, and a special edition boxed DVD version is available at the $100 tier.  There are many other tiers to choose from, so if you enjoy this type of game, or just like showing your support for adventure game veterans, show your support and pick a tier at the The 7th Guest 3: The Collector Kickstarter.

Broken Sword 5 Gets Release Dates for Its Two Parts

Revolution has posted news that Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse, the fifth game in the series, which was successfully crowd funded through Kickstarter last year, now has release dates.

The game will be released in two parts, with the first part seeing a release for Windows, Mac, and Linux on December 4, 2013.  The PlayStation Vita version is scheduled to be released later that month.  The concluding episode will release in January 2014. Android and iOS versions will be released shortly after each episode releases on PC.

Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary Edition Announced

Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary Edition is a high definition remake of the original 1993 adventure Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, which will be created by series creator Jane Jensen's Pinkerton Road studio and Moebius developer Phoenix Online Studios.

This game is the Mystery Game X which was announced last year.   Jane Jensen has been pitching a Gabriel Knight game many times over the years, to three different rights holders of the series, and she credits the success of the Pinkerton Road kickstarter with finally getting Activision to work out a deal.

The remake’s story and gameplay will remain faithful to the original, but the artwork and voices are being completely redone. According to Jane Jensen, the art will "stay true to the spirit of the original but, since we have such better resolution, [they worked] in a lot more New Orleans flavor and voodoo flavor where we could".  The loss of the original voice recordings required the voices to be re-recorded.  The voice recordings will be handled by Bay Area Sound, the studio responsible for the voice recordings in Telltale's games.

LucasArts Was Making a Day of the Tentacle Special Edition

When Disney ceased all development at LucasArts earlier this year, the press around it was focused on the cancelled Star Wars projects, such as Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault.  However, according to an extensive interview by Kotaku with former developers at various branches of the company, there were quite a few projects in the works that were also cancelled that the public didn't know about.

One of the projects revealed was a high definition remake of Day of the Tentacle, which was being developed by LucasArts Singapore.  Apparently, it was never officially greenlit, but the staff who were interviewed about it's existence estimated it at about 80% completed.

Former Telltale Directors Form New Studio

Campo Santo is a new game studio formed by Jake Rodkin and his fellow Idle Thumbs founder and co-lead on Telltale's The Walking Dead and Puzzle Agent 2, Sean Vanaman. Co-founding the studio with them are the lead designer of Mark of the Ninja, Nels Anderson, and artist Olly Moss.

Their first game will be coming out for Windows, OS X, and Linux, and is funded by, and will be a collaboration with, Oregon-based Panic Inc.  There's no news about what kind of game it will be, so the game may not be one that's covered on this site, but I decided to post the news here regardless, due to their pedigree.

Bill Tiller Is Now Working On The Perils of Man

His first Kickstarter campaign may not have been successful, but we will still see a Bill Tiller (lead artist of Curse of Monkey Island, creator of A Vampyre Story and Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island) adventure later this year.

He is working with IF Games, which is a new game studio opened by the Swiss animation house Boutiq, on a two part adventure game for the iPad titled The Perils of Man.  Each part will contain between 2 to 3 hours of gameplay.  It involves time travel that will revolve around events through time that "spans 150 years, darting from a tramp freighter adrift in the South China seas to impending disaster at the Chicago World's Fair, bringing a host of unforgettable characters, perilous exploits, and existential riddles along for the ride."  You will explore the "mysterious chronicle of history’s disasters and catastrophes", and use your ability to "timewalk to real-world events from the gilded age of scientific invention."

Both parts will be released completely for free, since the game serves as an advertisement for the 150-year anniversary of the insurance company Swiss Re. The game will not be cluttered with ads for the insurance company, however, as the only branding in the game is said to be the Swiss Re logo in the game's credits.  The exploration of risk throughout the gameplay itself and the game's storyline serve as the advertisement.  The game is said to contain a "special gameplay mechanic that reveals a hidden matrix of cause and effect".  And you will "command the fates of thousands by mastering a hidden technology that gives the player the ability to foresee risk."

The first part will be released for the iPad this October, and the second part is expected to be released some time before the end of this year.

Precinct: A New Kickstarter by Police Quest Creator

Another adventure game veteran has went the Kickstarter route to fund a new adventure game. This time it's Precinct, a new realistic police adventure simulation game by Jim Walls, the former police officer who created the Police Quest series at Sierra.

This new game will have you take up the shoes of officer Maxwell Jones in the corrupt town of Fraser Canyon, CA.  You will begin as a rookie and then work your way up the ranks.  The Police Quest games were always known for their realism in regards to police procedures and actions, and this game brings the realism up a notch by presenting the game in a first person perspective, blending the Sierra game style with modern technology.

The game can be pre-ordered at the $19 tier, at the $29 tier you will recieve the soundtrack in MP3 format plus VIP access to the game's website where you'll get to see bits of the game as it's being made, for $60 you'll get added to the special thanks section of the credits (plus everything from the lower tiers), at $75 you'll get beta access (plus everything from the lower tiers), and more.

So, if you like Police Quest, or Sierra style adventures in general, pick a tier and become a backer at the Precinct Kickstarter.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days DLC Is Out Now

The Walking Dead: 400 Days, a DLC episode for the first season of The Walking Dead which combines five stories in a single episode, is available now for PSN (in North America), PC, and Mac. Xbox Live gamers can buy the game on the fifth of July, while European PSN will get the game five days later, on the 10th. iOS players don't have to wait long this time around, since it will be released for those devices on the 11th. The DLC is $4.99, except if you purchased The Walking Dead through the Telltale store, in which case you'll receive it for free as a thank-you for buying directly from Telltale.

400 Days is also coming to the PS Vita, in a package with the rest of the five episodes of The Walking Dead, in August.

Broken Age Woes Lessened By Steam Early Access

Tim Schafer posted news about Broken Age's monetary and development woes, and plans to relieve some of those woes through releasing half of the game in January through Steam Early Access. Backers of Broken Age can read Tim's message here (or through the Backer only forum at Double Fine's forums).

News sites are picking up the story, so if you didn't back, you can still get the skinny on what's happening. Apparently, Tim designed the game too big in scope, so he's had to cut it down in order to fit in the budget. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter money still isn't enough for the large scope of the game, so he's funding the game additionally from the money Double Fine made from the games they're self publishing. He doesn't want to have to cut large things like the girl or the boy from the game, so he's decided to get additional funding through Steam Early Access. Steam Early Access will allow gamers to play the first half of the game in January 2014, and then play the rest of the game in a free update in April or May of 2014.

Those who backed the game don't have to worry, you'll get the Steam Early Access at no cost (this Steam Early Access plan is for additional purchases, not those already made). You'll also still be able to get access to the beta even earlier than that, as originally promised.

Rumor Mill: Night Dive Might Digitally Publish LucasArts Games

Night Dive Studios, the company that managed to untie the legal mess surrounding System Shock 2 to negotiate the digital re-release of that game, is apparently negotiating to digitally re-release more games that are currently unavailable.

In this case, it seems they are trying to free the LucasArts adventure games from the Disney Vault, since they posted a teaser on their Facebook page that they are "Heading to Corley Motors!" (complete with a shot of Ben Throttle on his Corley motorcycle). After posting shout-outs to more LucasArts adventure games, such as Sam & Max Hit the Road on their twitter page, they were asked by twitter user BJ Wanlund to clarify the meaning of their LucasArts teases. Night Dive Studios responded by saying "We're hoping for it as much as everyone else, that's all we can say at the moment!"

So it seems like more classic LucasArts adventure games might come out on digital distribution sites some day after all. Or, they might not. We'll just have to wait and see how this situation develops.

Kickstarter for Nelly Cootalot II: The Fowl Fleet

The Nelly Cootalot 2 Kickstarter has been going on for a while now, but somehow it slipped past my radar.  This is a sequel to the free adventure Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! They are only looking for a total of £15,000 only have just under £3,000 to go with 11 days left. So, it's quite doable.

For just  £8, you'll get a DRM-free version of the game for Windows (and Wine-wrapped versions for Mac and Linux).  For £2 more, you'll get digital versions of the game's poster and wallpapers.  £15 will get you a physical DVD, and £50 will get you a physical poster.  There's a lot more tiers to choose from, so pick a tier and support the Nelly Cootalot 2 Kickstarter.

The Cave is Coming to iOS

The Cave, Double Fine's adventure game designed by Ron Gilbert (of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island fame), and co-written by Double Fine's Chris Remo, is coming out soon for iOS. According to an E3 preview by Touch Gen, the game has been converted to use swipe controls in lieu of the cumbersome virtual thumbstick that most iOS platformers use. The updated control scheme reportedly works well. The iOS version of the game is scheduled to be released later this summer.

A Vampyre Story: Year One Kickstarter Is Live

The crowd funding campaign for A Vampyre Story: Year One, the prequel to Bill Tiller's A Vampyre Story, is now live on Kickstarter!

The game, which is set in the first year that Mona is captive in Castle Warg, begins when she first meets Froderick the bat. It is episodic (on Facebook, Bill Tiller mentioned that the first episode will tentatively be called Spring, with the other three being the remaining seasons of Year One), and the first episode should be about one third the size of A Vampyre Story, and have about five total hours of game play.

The Kickstarter goal is $200,000 for episode one, and (according to the afforementioned Facebook page) the other episodes could be funded through this kickstarter as well, depending on how much money is pledged.

The minimum tier with the download of the first episode is available for only $8 (with beta access included!). If you pledge higher, you'll get a soundtrack download at $25, a digital artbook at $50, a special collector's "big box" version (made with the dimensions of the Curse of Monkey Island box) at $100, a hardcover art book at $500, and even more goodies at the higher premium tiers. So, choose your tier and pledge your support for this classic style adventure game.

For those of you wondering about A Vampyre Story 2: A Bat's Tale, the reason that one's not being Kickstarted is because the rights lie with the publisher, Crimson Cow.  But, Bill Tiller did mention on Facebook that if this Kickstarter does well, the chances of A Vampyre Story 2 coming out soon ("fall 2014 or sooner") go way up.

Kickstarter for LucasArts inspired "A Small Favor"

A new kickstarter has been launched by ClickShake Games for a 2D side scrolling adventure game for Windows and Mac. The game, A Small Favor is a sci-fi comedy that was inspired by the classic LucasArts adventure games, as well as Beneath a Steel Sky and Another World (known in the United States as Out of this World).

The company is no stranger to adventures, as they already released their first game, The Ballads of Reemus, a traditional point and click adventure game based on their free flash series The Several Adventures of Reemus, in 2012.

A DRM-free download of the game itself is $10 USD (or for $4 less if you are lucky enough to get one of the few remaining "early bird" slots).  $10 more will net you DRM-free downloads of the game plus The Ballads of Reemus (the latter of which is redeemable as soon as the kickstarter closes).  The reward tiers for this one are the most reasonable I've seen so far.  You can name a character at the $30 tier, get a boxed copy of the game at the $35 tier, name a character and write one sentence of dialog for the character at the $40 tier, name an inventory item at the $100 tier, and become a character at the $200 tier.  There are also many more tiers to choose from, right up to taking a starring role in the game as a playable character in an easter egg side quest at the $1,000 tier.

They are only aiming for $30,000 USD for their goal, and as of this writing, they are already a tenth of the way there with 27 days left.  If you enjoy comedy adventure games, pick a tier, and support A Small Favor.

First Screenshots of The Wolf Among Us

In the May issue of Game Informer (available now in their digital issue), the first screenshots of The Wolf Among Us have been revealed. The art design enhances the playable comic book feel of Telltale's The Walking Dead tenfold.

The issue also reveals more of the "Fables" that we'll be encountering in the game. There's the ones we already know: Bigby Wolf (the big bad wolf), who's the sheriff of Fabletown, and the person we'll be controlling, Mr. Toad (who is a carjacking thief, and who is able to keep himself and his family in human form to keep from getting sent to the farm), one of the three little pigs (named Colin, the one who built his house out of straw, is a professional mooch who lives on the farm with his cousins, but sneaks into the city since he's bored with farm life). There's also Ichabod Crane (deputy mayor of Fabletown for nearly 115 years), Snow White (the assistant to the deputy mayor of Fabletown) Beauty and the Beast (she's dependent on him (but is still said to have genuine care and concern for him), and he works two and a half jobs in order to keep up their lavish lifestyle now that they don't have servants), and Buffin (a talking, winged monkey from the land of Oz who is Fabletown's librarian, and prone to mischief).

There's some more information on how Telltale has evolved the gameplay from The Walking Dead as well. The action has improved. It will still be motivated by the game's narrative, and it will still be presented in a cinematic style, but players will have more control over the action (which in this game involve bigby throwing punches). And since Bigby is a Fable, the action will be more over the top than The Walking Dead since Bigby can take more punches than Lee ever could (and the amount of damage you take is shown in your appearance, and is noticed by the other characters in the game). There will still be quick time events (involving Bigby making a decision in the middle of a fight to decide the game's outcome). However, it seems the QTE's this time will be just the decision making ones and not the button pressing ones.

The relationship building in The Walking Dead will also be expanded in The Wolf Among Us, as it's said to contain a lot more of that, and there will be a powerful emotional connection to the characters like Telltale did with The Walking Dead.

As Telltale has said before, you'll be able to choose what decisions to make like The Walking Dead. The Wolf Among Us will also have the opportunity to choose when to go to different locations, making the events unfold in different ways. Two events will happen at the same time, and the other event will still unfold regardless of whether you've experienced it first-hand or not, giving the game an extra element of realism (and replay value).

Telltale Cancels King's Quest

In a statement released to Digital Trends, Steve Allison, Telltale's senior vice president of marketing, has confirmed that Telltale's King's Quest series has been cancelled.

“While we deeply love King’s Quest here at Telltale, we can confirm that we are no longer working on the franchise. There was a time last year that we investigated partnering with third party developers to produce the game as a partnership but decided against outsourcing. We are not privy to what plans Activision has for the franchise, if any.”

In the same article, Paul Trowe of Replay Games states that Activision is planning on doing something with the King's Quest license. However, it's unknown just exactly what Activision has planned.

Disney Closes the LucasArts Development Studio, but LucasArts Licensing Remains

Disney has closed the LucasArts development studio, and all in-house projects have been canceled. LucasArts licensing remains and will only be licensing out the properties to external developers from here on out. Only Star Wars is mentioned, there is no word on whether the classic LucasArts original properties will be licensed as well.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games," LucasArts parent company LucasFilm said in a statement. "As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

The LucasArts development studio has given me many great memories over the years, and I'm sorry to see it go. I give my best wishes to those who have lost their jobs due to the closure.

Play As Tim Schafer Again In Host Master Deux

Host Master Deux: Quest for Identity is the free flash sequel to 2009's free flash classic Host Master and the Conquest of Humor. Like the original game, you control Double Fine studio head Tim Schafer himself, as he solves puzzles backstage at the Game Developers Conference in order to get on stage so he can host. This time, the game ditches the classic LucasArts inspired interface of the original for a platform adventure interface inspired by Double Fine's own The Cave. Like the original game, this game features multiple endings (and their humor is among the best part of the adventure).

Telltale's Fables Is Now Called The Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us, Telltale's game based on Bill Willingham's Fables comics has been revealed. It is a prequel to the comics, and will be in canon with them. It follows Fables' Big Bad Wolf, Bigby Wolf, who is sheriff of a secret hidden community in New York City that protects characters who have been exiled from fairy tales. Bigby Wolf must protect those fairy tale characters, including a chain smoking member of the Three Little Pigs and a car stealing Mr. Toad. It will be released for Windows, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this summer.

Also, The Key Party is a teaser website for Telltale's upcoming Poker Night 2, which like the original will feature characters crossing over from different franchises in order to play a game of poker together. The keys revealed have been DeSoto keys for Sam from Sam & Max, the big knife for Brock Samson from Venture Bros., the Necronomicon for Ash from Evil Dead, Claptrap's eye from Borderlands 2, and a companion cube for GLaDOS from Portal (the latter two being in the game instead of Handsome Jack and Chell as previously assumed).
